What is Red Nose Day?

You've probably noticed a lot of photos lately of celebrities wearing red clown noses.
It's all part of an effort to bring attention to "Red Nose Day," which started in Britain in 1988 to raise money for poverty-stricken children in the UK and Africa. This year, the fund-raiser has extended to the United States, where NBC is airing a three-hour special Thursday night.
What is it? It's sponsored by Comic Relief UK, an organization founded after the 1985 Live Aid concert. (It helped inspire -- but has no other relation to -- the American telethon started by Bob Zmuda and long hosted by Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal.) The British event is held every two years. There are also Red Nose Days in Finland, Germany and Iceland.
How has it done? According to the Red Nose Day website, it's raised more than £78 million (about $122 million at current exchange rates).
Why is it just coming to the United States? Part charity and part business, according to accounts. Variety reported that NBC executive Paul Telegdy used to work for the BBC, which has aired Red Nose Day events since the late '80s. He's seen the power of the event in Britain for raising money for a good cause.
But it's also an opportunity to raise awareness of the NBCUniversal brand networks, he added.
"Live events are really, really important to this company. And this is one of those times when you get to do something that is great entertainment but also really stands for something," he said.
For his part, writer and director Richard Curtis ("Notting Hill," "Love, Actually"), who co-founded the event, is thrilled.
"For many years, I have dreamt of bringing Red Nose Day to the US, and I am so excited that we have teamed up with NBC, who will do such a brilliant job on this," he said on the Red Nose Day website. "Experience has taught me how extraordinarily compassionate and generous Americans can be, and I've lived my life in awe of American comedy talent. So putting those two things together will, I hope, create an amazing event that will really make a massive difference to the lives of millions of children and their families in the US and in the poorest countries around the world."
What charities are involved? They include the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Children's Health Fund, Feeding America, the National Council of La Raza and the United Way.
    Red Nose Day Facts

Red Nose Day is a biennial telethon broadcast fundraising event for people to act silly while raising money for charities. It began in 1988 as a broadcast to raise money by Comic Relief. Comic Relief is an organization that launched in 1985 to raise money to address poverty and social injustice throughout the world through the use of comedy and laughter. The event is held every two years as a U.K fundraising event, and it encourages people to wear a red nose and act silly to help raise money. On red Nose Day the BBC One broadcasts comedy and documentary films, bringing the U.K. together to address poverty and injustice in Africa and in the U.K.

    Interesting Red Nose Day Facts:
The first broadcast by the charity Comic Relief took place on Christmas Day on BBC One, from the Sudan in a refugee camp.
In 1988 Comic Relief broadcast the first Red Nose Day. It is held in March every two years.
Issues covered by Red Nose Day in Africa include HIV and AIDS education, literacy, immunization, and community rebuilding.
Issues covered by Red Nose Day in the U.K. include discrimination and prejudice against disabled people, rights of older people, and domestic violence escape routes for women.
Every pound (U.K. money) raised goes to helping others. The charity itself is run by donations, and by volunteers so money donated for Red Nose Day events is spent on helping others.
The mission of Comic Relief is to drive positive change through the use of entertainment.
Comic Relief's founders were Alexander Mendes and Richard Curtis. Richard Curtis is a screenwriter. He wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually, Bridget Jones's Diary (and the sequel), The No. 1 Detective Agency, and One Night with Robbie Williams. They started the charity in response to the famine that was occurring in Ethiopia.
The first Red Nose Day event raised a whopping 15 million pounds. In 2009 the event raised 82 million pounds. In 2011 Red Nose Day raised 108 million pounds. In total since its beginning the Comic Relief charity has raised more than 600 million pounds.
76 countries have benefited from Red Nose Day fundraising events.
More than 11,000 projects in the United Kingdom have been funded by Red Nose Day contributions alone.
Comic Relief raises money all year long to support their work, not just on Red Nose Day.
Money raised in New Zealand on Red Nose Day goes to help fund research into SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
The name for Red Nose Day was inspired by the fact that clowns wear red noses and make people laugh by doing silly things.
Some of the charities given funds by Comic Relief include Oxfam, Christian Aid, Sight Savers, and Save the Children Fund.
Celebrities often get involved with Red Nose Day, including Kate Moss, Simon Cowell, Hugh Grant, Damian Lewis, Lily Allen, David Williams, and Nick Grimshaw.
Comic Relief also has other telethon events to raise money for its causes, including Sport Relief, and Children in Need.

Easy Ways to control on Waste, Everyday life

Living greener doesn’t always require drastic change, like moving to a treehouse or foraging for herbs. All it takes is a few small tweaks in your daily living to cut down your waste count by a significant amount. With a little research and a lot of motivation, you can be become the Green Queen (or King) in no time - and might even be able to say goodbye to your garbage can. These nine tips and tricks for cutting down your waste will get you started on a greener living.

    1. COMPOST

Yes, the big “C.” Composting may sound like a practice limited to only the truest of treehuggers, but, in fact, it’s actually quite easy and requires very little time, effort and space. The process involves upcycling leftover food and organic matter to make a dark, rich substance known as humus, often used as a conditioner for soil. Keep a small bin on your kitchen counter where you can easily dump food scraps (including fruit, vegetables, eggshells, and coffee grounds).

ECO-ADVICE: Different lifestyles call for different composting methods. If you’re an avid gardener with a backyard, you can use the compost for your personal garden. If you live in a city that doesn’t offer curbside pickup, you might be able to donate your compost to a community garden or nearby farm.

    2. BUY IN BULK

Buying in bulk is a great way to reduce packaging waste, save money, and try new foods in small quantities. Bulk stores are usually made up of rows of bins with scoops for you to ladle out your desired amount. In many bulk stores, you can buy grains, cereals, dried fruit, herbs, toiletries, cleaning products and even oils and vinegars.

ECO-ADVICE: Only buy as much as you can use before it goes bad. As a precaution, see if you can sample an item before you fill up.

Remember to bring your own containers and bags when buying in bulk (Shutterstock)

    3. CARRY YOUR OWN JARS AND RE-USABLE BAGS

Canvas bags are a treehugger’s staple. Avoid plastic altogether by always carrying a reusable bag or tote (many are built to be compact) in your purse or car. If you’re going bulk shopping, bring along jars with lids for any liquids.

ECO-ADVICE: Keep a stash of reusable bags in an easy-to-remember place so you can grab them any time you go shopping. Whether it’s your car, below the kitchen sink or next to the car keys - just designate a place and stick with it.

    4. GET TO KNOW YOUR TRASH

Okay, it may seem a little gross, but it’s definitely worth taking a few minutes one day to rifle through your trash bin. See what types of packaging and products you seem to be throwing out most – this is where you should focus your waste reducing efforts.

ECO-ADVICE: While you’re down there ransacking your trash bin, double check to see if the items you’re throwing out are actually recyclable. Toilet paper rolls, non-aerosol deodorants, and cooking oil bottles are just some items people mistake for non-recyclable.

    5. REPLACE PAPER WITH CLOTH

Yes, the disposable quality of paper products is convenient, but you just end up with avoidable waste. Napkins, paper towels, cleaning wipes can all be replaced with microfiber cloths, old t-shirts, huck towels and cloth napkins.

ECO-ADVICE: Keep a bin under the kitchen sink where you can easily toss dirty, used cloths and then throw them in with the rest of the laundry.

    6. RETHINK YOUR TOILETRIES

Going green doesn’t mean sacrificing personal hygiene. Try a bamboo compostable toothbrush as a substitute for a plastic one, and organic, vegan makeup in place of drugstore brands.ECO-ADVICE: Also make sure the packaging is recyclable when purchasing eco-friendly toiletry products.

    7. GET YOUR BILLS ONLINE

These days, most companies offer the option to receive bills via email or through an online account. Checking this box means cutting out a lot of unwanted mail and paper waste - much of which you probably throw out without opening anyway.

ECO-ADVICE: To avoid receiving paper-heavy pamphlets and promotional materials as well, pop a 'No Circulars' sign on your mailbox.

    Payment options on computer
Switch your payment method via your online banking account (Shutterstock)

    8. BUY A REUSABLE WATER  BOTTLE

Reusable water bottles are probably the easy step to sustainability. Purchasing a reusable water bottle you can fill up anytime, anywhere will definitely save you money and reduce your carbon footprint.

ECO-ADVICE: If you’re feeling guilty about the plastic water bottles you’ve accumulated over time, don’t fear. There are plenty of DIY projects that transform your plastic bottles to something new and useful.

    9. MAKE YOUR OWN PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS

If you’re feeling especially ambitious, try making your own hygiene products at home. Soaps, toothpastes and even deodorants can be made using only a few natural ingredients, like coconut oil and baking soda. This goes for spa treatments, as well.

ECO-ADVICE: If you’d like a nice scent or taste to compliment your DIY creation, try a few drops of aromatic essential oils, like peppermint, sandalwood or lavender.

10 Creative Public Awareness Ads That Makes You Think

A well-made advertisement is designed to grab your attention and to remain in your memory long after you’ve left it behind, and that is exactly what many of these social causes need. Getting people to think and worry about various social and environmental issues (or even simply getting them to be aware of them) is important for raising public supporting and affecting meaningful changes.

A few of these ads are, in fact, commercial ads, but it’s still nice that they champion socially or environmentally aware causes/products. Just like with commercial advertisements, having just the facts is not enough. They are important, but the ad must also appeal to the observer’s emotions. Many studies have indicated that emotion can have a powerful effect on memory formation, ensuring that memories with emotion will last longer than those without.

Reasons to Venture out of Your Comfort Zone

Do you always feel safe and secure in your comfort zone? Do you rarely do something that is different from your daily routine? Being stuck in such a state of complacency can have many disadvantages. Here are some reasons why it is important for you to come out of your comfort zone.

    1. You will learn to take risksIf you don’t come out of your comfort zone, you will never learn to take risks in life. It can mean any type of risks, whether it is the risk of taking an important decision or the risk of investing your money in the stock market. When you take less risks in life, the rewards are less too. Step out of your comfort zone and dare to do something different.

    2. You will be able to handle complicated situationsYou will learn how to deal with complicated situations only when you step out of your comfort zone. Whether it is an explosive argument with a coworker or facing a flat tire in the middle of the countryside, you will at the least be unafraid when faced with a task that is outside your comfort zone.

    3. Success will seem within reachSuccessful people generally become successful by taking risky decisions, using their social skills to win over people, taking on tough challenges and overcoming all their fears. All this may become very hard for someone who never wants to do anything that he or she is not comfortable doing. This is the reason why it is important for you to come out of your comfort zone if you are ambitious in life and you want to chase success.

    4. You will try new things in lifeThose who are happy to stay within their comfort zones are generally not too keen to try new things in life. It is important that you come out of your comfort zone if you really want to enjoy everything life has to offer. You can do this only by trying new things every day, whether it is trying for a new job, tasting a new dish or moving to a new city.

    5. You will develop new talents and skillsLearning new talents and skills require a person to do something that he or she may not be capable or comfortable of doing. This will require that person to come of out of his or her comfort zone. For example, if you are not comfortable of dancing in front of everyone, you will never be able to learn how to dance on stage in front of a crowd. Venturing beyond your comfort zone will allow for not only the development, but also the discovery of your talents and skills.

    6. You will get to do things that you have always wanted to doThe fear of stepping outside your comfort zone can force you to do something that you are not particularly fond of doing. For example, you have a job that you hate but you are not able to quit simply because you are afraid of a new job environment and new coworkers. Don’t let your fears hold you back. Often you may really want to pursue something close to your heart or follow something that you know you will excel at. To do things that you always wanted to do means venturing out of your comfort zone. So take that chance and you will see that you are capable of so much more!

Ways of Appreciating What You Have In Life

You could get a new lease of life by understanding the value of what you already have and being grateful for the good things in your life. Here are a few ways in which you can appreciate what you have in life.

    1. Compare yourself with people who don’t have even a quarter of what you have

If you think you have hit the bottom in your life and you have nothing to look forward to, look at people who are not as fortunate as you. Compare yourself with people who don’t even have half of what you have, in terms of wealth, family or career. By doing this you will be able to realize that you have to stop complaining all the time to be able to appreciate your life.

    2. Hone your best skills

What you have in life does not only include your materialistic possessions but also your knowledge and skills. Every person has unique skills and so do you. Think about your best skills and how you can use them to gain an edge over others. Life will become naturally easier and more beautiful when you are able to use your top skills to get what you want and show everyone what you are capable of.

    3. Put effort in showing love and affection to your near and dear ones

One of the most genuine ways of appreciating what you have in life is to offer gratitude and love to your near and dear ones who may have stood by you in the worst of times. In the rut of life, you may have taken them for granted at many occasions. By putting efforts in showering affection on them and making time for them, you will be able to appreciate life in its purest form.

    4. Travel and explore

When you travel and get exposed to new people and places, you may be able to see how differently you were brought up from other people and how different your life is. You will be able to see your own life and achievements in a completely new perspective and this may help you to be grateful about what you have in life.

    5. Try to have a positive outlook all the time

Being grumpy, whiny and sad about everything in life is only going to pull you away from being able to appreciate what you have in life, whether it is wealth, family or career. Try to smile a lot, have a chirpy outlook and let your attitude be contagious.

    6. Pause and slow down

One of the first things you may need to do to be thankful is to take a pause and slow down. Doing simple things like watching the rain, observing a flower bloom, going for a walk on a misty morning or sitting under the stars at night will make you thank your stars for what you have in life.

    7. Involve yourself in charity and community work

Community and charity work does not always mean helping the poor and feeling good about yourself. It also includes helping others by sharing your skills or knowledge. Teach a neighbor’s child, help your aunt’s kids get through their homework or share your hobbies and skills with others. Your conscience will feel light and you will be able to feel good about yourself because of your contribution to the society.

Ways to Find Meaning In Life

Do you ever wonder why on earth you are here? You know, your purpose in life? Why you actually exist on this planet? These are probably the most subtle, yet profound, questions people ask themselves every day and I can bet you there’s probably as many different answers to these questions as there are people asking them, too. This is why instead of asking yourself why you are here and what exactly it is you should be doing, let us begin to make your experiences the answer to your questions and put some meaning and oomph back in your life, where they belong.

This entire world is in a rat race. In all the hustle and bustle of life we need to stop and look within ourselves to find some meaning in life. Now one may ask, meaning of what? For some people getting married, having kids, getting a good job, spiritually developing oneself or just doing the given job well could be the meaning of life but that does not mean that it is the same for everyone. We hope that the below mentioned points will help you see your life in a new way and help you find life’s meaning.

    1. It’s a beautiful world

The world around you is beautiful. Take the time to feel nature around, open your arms to the wind, and appreciate the sky at dawn. Try and see the beauty in everything around you. There is beauty in the way a subway gets filled and emptied every morning and night. There is beauty in the way young students go to school. You can also find beauty in the way seasons come and go. And if there is something that disturbs you, take a deep breath and put your positive energy into finding beauty in that.

    2. Be yourself

One has to play many roles in this world. We are a parent, a sister or a brother, a cousin, an aunt or an uncle, a friend, a colleague, an acquaintance or even a neighbor at the same time! We have to fulfill many duties simultaneously. We must remember to be ourselves at all times. It might take a long time to find out the real ‘I’ but we must try and talk to our inner conscience. Find out what makes your heart happy, what satisfies your inner self and go towards it.

    3. Listen to yourself

Intuition plays a big role in human life. It is always there with you. It answers all your queries and helps you to understand your life better. Listen to it. It lets you know what is a good or a bad choice for you. Your choice will bring happiness to your heart.

    4. Believe in your talent

Each one of us is bestowed upon with some talent. Believe in it. Many people grow up only to think that they could have been better doing something else. When you get this thought, stop and think. Could you still work upon your talent and go ahead in life? If yes, don’t wait. We might be successful or might be lesser but our heart would always be filled with the feeling that we tried.

    5. Come out of your comfort zone

Being afraid of things and situations is natural. But we can avoid the negative thoughts that flow in our minds while doing anything. We need to come out of our comfort zones and try to know the unknown without any negative thoughts barring our way. Knowledge is the power. Know what you want to do with your life and work towards it by breaking out of your comfort zone.

Beautiful Life Lessons we can Learn from Nature

Basically, we all are a part of nature but we hardly realize it. We differentiate ourselves from nature and call ourselves the highest and most civilized living beings on earth. We forget that nature provides so much abundantly and generously and in return we heartlessly destroy and deplete all the wealth that she bestows us. Nature also teaches us the morals and values that we must possess so as to lead a peaceful life and we do not perceive them nor do we understand them.

So, here are some of life lessons from nature that we must learn which she gives us free of cost!

    Be Independent

Life Lessons From Nature : 5. Be Independent
Have you ever wondered how those birds are so free? It is because they are independent. They do their own task with all their might. Even though they are tiny little beings with no sixth sense, they know how to live without depending on anybody. They migrate from one continent to another without the help of any external device but by just believing in their instincts. They knit and build their own beautiful nests using small twigs and sticks by carrying them with their tiny beaks over long distances, one by one and take care of their young ones all at once. They fly high in the sky with all pride and happiness of being independent and living a free life full of self confidence and dignity.

Wait and Endure the Pressure, You Will Shine

Life Lessons From Nature : 4. Wait and Endure the Pressure, You Will Shine

As soon as we hear the term ‘pressure’, we all are reminded of the precious diamond. Can anyone believe that such an shiny, transparent, precious thing comes from pure trash? Just the very high pressures that those leaves and other forest trash endure for many thousands of years, turn them into such amazing things! Even trash can be converted into invaluable gems just with the help of time and by undergoing some rigorous treatment. The same applies to us. Never break down, face whatever life gives you, be bold enough and you will shine like a diamond, sooner perhaps than later!

Know your Depths but Don’t Show Off

Life Lessons From Nature : 3. Know your Depths but Don't Show Off

The oceans and seas are always calm and serene. You never know how deep they are unless you step into them. You never know how far they go, they are just vast and wide. They never show off nor do they brag about their vastness and their huge depths. They are quite simple and poised. They help huge ships to traverse through them and connect different countries as well as protect different continents as well. They never show their fiery nature unless they are disturbed, unnecessarily, through storms, hurricanes, tsunamis etc.
The same goes to mankind, one who has great knowledge, a scholar never shows off nor do they brag about it. If you are knowledgeable or talented, stay quiet, you need not advertise. You can help people with your knowledge and talent instead. Do not show what you actually are, unless you are being disturbed out of your wit. Stay calm and enjoy the serenity.

Wherever You Are, Just Be “You”

Life Lessons From Nature : 2. Wherever You Are, Just Be “You”

Do you know, water lilies bloom in the midst of mud in dirty water? But they always seem fresh and fragrant despite all the dirt around them. Nothing can contaminate the vibrant beauty and the fragrance of a water lily. You can also shine and be good wherever you go and whatever be the environment you are in. Nothing can spoil your charm or your talents and wit if you are strong and stable with your own qualities and character. So, wherever you are, do not get perturbed by those unnecessary distractions and dirt. Just Be “You.”

Be Punctual, Do Your Duty without Fail

Life Lessons From Nature : 1. Be Punctual, Do Your Duty without Fail
Can you imagine a day without sun? Will you call it a ‘day’ anymore? What if the sun feels too lazy and takes rest for sometime instead of rising early in the morning and comes to the east at 8.00 pm?

If the sun doesn’t rise at the right time, we will not be able to survive without the warmth provided by it. The plants will die due to lack of sunlight for photosynthesis, as a result we will not get food. Flowers won’t bloom either and the animals will suffer, water will not evaporate, and there won’t be rain. There will not be any climatic or weather changes. The earth will become dormant and life will not exist anymore on the planet!

Be Generous and Never Expect Anything in Return

Life Lessons From Nature : 10. Be Generous and Never Expect Anything in Return
Have you wondered about the generosity of a tree? Trees gives shade under the hot sun, cool breeze, purify the air and gives fresh oxygen to breathe. They give you flowers, fill your stomach with those delicious fruits and vegetables and help you get rid of hunger and starvation. They hold the soil firmly with those strong roots, prevent soil erosion and maintain good ground water level. In some trees even the bark and leaves are of great medicinal value. They share all they have got with every living being with no expectations.
We receive all these happily and what do we give in return? We give back nothing but deforestation, dry lands, global warming etc. Don’t you think it is time to rethink and act with gratitude?

    Be Active, Orderly, Hardworking

Life Lessons From Nature : 9. Be Active, Orderly, Hardworking

Ever noticed an ant taking rest?  They are always busy, walking, running, marching in a particular order. If they find sugar somewhere, you can see a very long train of ants marching tirelessly, carrying those crystals above their head!  They never go astray from that particular track. However huge their food particle is, they never lose their confidence, they even join hands with two or three other ants and carry them to their destination! Well, that’s called “Team Work.”
And when they meet the other ants coming from the opposite direction, it looks like they talk to each other and walk even though they have a very busy schedule!!
Not only are they so brisk, energetic and hard-working, they always remain intact and follow an order and spend time with their fellow members! Isn’t this something we all should follow in our life too??

No Matter How Hard Your Path Is, Just Keep Going

Life Lessons From Nature : 8. No Matter How Hard Your Path Is, Just Keep Going

When we face so much of pain and obstacles in our life, we lose our confidence in ourselves, feel hurt and disheartened and sometimes leave the path that we always wanted to take, in our life. But most of the time, you are not that far from reaching your goal, but you had to simply quit because of the fear of some impending doom or just because you are way too tired.
Never lose hope, look at the River! She starts from the highest mountain tops, run through all those thorns, wild stones and rocks. She goes through all the dirt on the way and still endures it all in order to finally reach her ultimate home – The Sea. But in the process she become clean, crystal clear, serving all the other living creatures, quenching their thirst, creating fertile lands, irrigating fields without taking rest anywhere in the middle!

Share your Joy, It Gets doubled!

Life Lessons From Nature : 7. Share your Joy, It Gets doubled!

Joy when shared gets doubled, while sorrow when shared gets halved. The best example is a crow! Even if they find a small piece of food, they call all their friends, share it with them and only then they eat it. They even carry their food in their beaks to feed their young ones. They are never too greedy nor are they too jealous. They share happily with all the other fellow beings and eat and feed even more happily.

Live as if there is no tomorrow

Life Lessons From Nature : 6. Live as if there is no tomorrow
There are many flies and bugs that live just for 24 hours and not more! That is their total life span! But if you see them, they will be so happy and merrily dance around with the other beings of their species, play, enjoy, eat joyously, love and literally live for the day till the moment they die!
You may think 24 hours is too less. But it is never too less to live if really wish to “live.” Live your life as if there is no tomorrow. Love with all your heart, work with all your passion, smile without any worries. Live and let live!

Hope you have learnt your most important lesson from nature now. Be punctual and do your duty. If you expect others to be perfect, you too should try to do your part perfectly!
